Tottenham 4-3 Man Utd: Following the howlers of Altay Bayindir and Fraser Forster, Spurs advance to the Carabao Cup semifinals.
After a thrilling victory over Manchester United, Tottenham advanced to the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, courtesy to goals by Dominic Solanke (2), Dejan Kulusevski, and Heung-Min Son; mistakes also led to goals from Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo, and Jonny Evans.
On an evening filled with terrible goalkeeping errors and defensive blunders, Tottenham defeated Manchester United 4-3 to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
These two teams' seasons have been incredibly uneven, and their backlines showed why with clumsy performances in north London that left both sets of fans cheering and hoping for the best during an intense match.
Ruben Amorim's team overcame a 3-0 deficit to win 3-2 when Fraser Forster twice fumbled with the ball at his feet for United goals. However, Altay Bayindir let a Heung-Min Son corner go in over his head as Tottenham's stress increased and the visitors piled forward, threatening an equaliser.
It is difficult to determine which substitute goalie performed worse, but they weren't alone. Add that to his bad parry out for Dominic Solanke to open the scoring that evening.
Lisandro Martinez's "wimpish" touch to Dejan Kulusevski for Spurs' second goal, which came just 46 seconds into the second half, was criticised by Gary Neville. Soon after, the home team ripped through United's defence once more, with Solanke apparently putting Spurs in cruise control by slipping inside Martinez and then firing through Jonny Evans' legs.
Spurs rarely have it that easy, though, as Bruno Fernandes pounced on Forster's mishandled pass in his own box, allowing Joshua Zirkzee to tap in before Amad Diallo ran down the 'keeper for the second. Evans nodded in to make the last seconds as hectic as the previous ones, but Spurs managed to surrender from a set-piece even deep into stoppage time.
When the final whistle blew, the home crowd sent out a loud cheer. Their chances of winning a trophy have increased, but it is hard to predict if they will make it to Wembley if their final-four matches against Liverpool, whom they were drawn against after the game, are as crazy as this.
In contrast, Man Utd's momentum following their victory in the Manchester derby has halted. Although he and Ange Postecoglou will hope his teams can produce more consistent and controlled success in the future when their long list of absentees returns, Amorim has a tough task ahead of him, given the off-field concerns surrounding Marcus Rashford's future and the on-field issues.
Postecoglou: You're not amused?
Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham:
"We made it harder than it should have been, we were well in control, played really well, we looked like we were going to manage the game and then two bad moments, the first one damaged Fraser and then the second one occurred as a result of that. However, we scored a fourth and displayed character.
"I enjoy the entire game. Are you not amused? I am aware that my lack of strategy is likely causing the studio to lose it.
"At the moment, there are a lot of center-halves and kids on the bench missing. We will experience tremendous growth if we can get through this phase."
Amorim: We lost money since we were unconnected for eight minutes.
United manager Ruben Amorim:
"The possession was under our control. Although we weren't the greatest team during the entire game, I believe we were the best in the majority of it. It was difficult to recover after our eight-minute outage, but the guys performed a fantastic job. The fourth goal was incredibly difficult for us, even though we were quite close to the draw.
"We disconnected for eight minutes and that cost us the game."
Regarding if it was a mistake to leave Rashford off the roster once more: "It was never a mistake if I felt I was doing the right thing for the team." A decision must be made. It wasn't a mistake since, in my opinion, I'm doing what's best for the squad."
