Germany—After thunderstorms forced the postponement of their last-16 encounter, Germany overcame Denmark 2-0 on June 29 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 competition. Goals by Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala in the second half of the game sealed the victory.
The first half of the match was delayed by twenty minutes due to inclement weather. Joachim Andersen, a Danish defender, was a hero just after the half until his close-range effort was called offside, giving away a penalty that Havertz scored in the 53rd minute.
They did, however, settle into the game, with Christian Eriksen coming dangerously close to scoring on a counterattack just before the Dortmund BVB Stadion was forced to halt play in the 35th minute owing to lighting and thunder and pouring rain.
Referee Michel Oliver ordered the players out onto the field for a quick warm-up, which caused the game to stall for more than 20 minutes. When play resumed, Havertz's header was superbly saved by Schmeichel, almost giving Germany the lead.
When Andersen scored with a loose ball inside the box following a free kick, Denmark believed they had grabbed the lead, but the VAR disallowed the goal.
After three minutes, Andersen's handball inside the area was flagged by VAR to the referee after he unintentionally touched David Raum's cross with his right hand.
The stadium erupted in celebration as Havertz finished cleanly, and as Denmark sought the equalizer, they found themselves frequently vulnerable to counterattacks, with Havertz and Leroy Sane missing excellent close-range opportunities.
But Musiala did not let the opportunity slip, finishing calmly to put Germany's spot in the quarterfinals against either Spain or Georgia after latching onto a long pass.
