Everton 0–0 Newcastle: On the return to Goodison Park, Anthony Gordon was denied by Jordan Pickford from the spot.

Anthony Gordon, a former Everton player, wastes a 12-yard opportunity; Everton's own penalty appeal is denied in the second half; both teams are disappointed with the outcome as they approach the international break.

Everton 0–0 Newcastle: On the return to Goodison Park, Anthony Gordon was denied by Jordan Pickford from the spot.

In front of the Gwladys Street End, Anthony Gordon missed a penalty kick as Newcastle and Everton drew 0-0.

Jordan Pickford made the correct guess as the England winger, who moved from Goodison Park to Newcastle in 2023, attempted to score from 12 yards out.

Everton's first Premier League clean sheet of the season and their fifth point from the previous three games were celebrated like a last-minute winner.

Gordon fired wide in the second half, while Nick Pope denied Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a low strike in the closing third, demonstrating the lack of talent on both sides.

Newcastle's inefficiency in the last third of the game was demonstrated by the fact that, despite having seven attempts from within the box in the second half, they failed to muster a single effort on goal after Gordon saved a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

The VAR booth at Stockley Park had a busy evening as they had to intervene to reject an Everton goal in the first half when replays indicated that Abdoulaye Doucoure was offside. They also stepped in to give Newcastle the penalty that Gordon had failed to give after James Tarkowski had fouled Sandro Tonali inside the box with the ball.

After a collision with Dan Burn, Calvert-Lewin was also certain he should have been given a penalty, but referee Craig Pawson waved it off and VAR didn't think it was a clear mistake.

On the penalty save, Pickford said, "We were double bluffing each other!"

"I simply thought he would go keepers left. It struck me squarely on my beak and off my knee. I don't believe I did it flawlessly.

It resembles attempting to double bluff one another. I defeated him this evening.

"I told him you went right the last two times when he questioned why I went that way. It's a nice, clear sheet, and maybe we can improve upon it.

Every game versus Newcastle is difficult. It is disappointing not to win, so I might reward myself with a few [drinks]."

Dyche is happy with the defense's advancement.

"It has been difficult to piece together teams that we have been working with. The back five impressed me; I felt they were excellent. Taking everything into account, we win the point, and we've played well the past three games."

Regarding Calvert Lewin's penalty claim for Everton: "He's [Calvert-Lewin] attempting to complete it." To put it another way, is he calling a foul if that occurs in the middle of the pitch? Definitely, in my opinion.

"All I can see is this squad, their intention, and the fact that they went out and performed well against a very good team. The mindset develops.

"You make an effort to be upbeat. We must hope that everyone gets through this phase and that some players return as we continue to progress and sustain further injuries."

Howe: That was our best away performance in a very long time.
Eddie Howe, manager of Newcastle United, speaking

"We performed well today, in my opinion, even without the crucial last minute. They are a challenging squad to contain. Until the very end, we played well with the ball.

"I felt much better. Our best performance away from home in a long time. I felt that we were in control of the game and that the mindset was good. We can be upset about not winning, but when you consider the whole performance, it is far superior."

Regarding Anthony Gordon: "I felt he performed admirably. The penalty is going to be the disappointing thing for both of us. It is one of those times when he has to wait a long time to think about something, and it is never simple. He has his method, and it has worked out beautifully for him. He gave a really strong performance all around."
